Pinteresting PR

The internet is one of the single most important inventions in our lifetime.
It’s also a great place to look at funny pictures of cats.
PR professionals are constantly looking for new ways to execute PR in the digital arena. The social media site Pinterest is another in a long line of tools for interacting on the web with possible uses for businesses. The site is a virtual bulletin board for content, primarily images. Users, called “pinners” can share pictures, make multiple boards and connect with other users by viewing their pinboards.
Pinterest’s unique point is that it connects people based on a shared interest. It is a combination of scrapbooking, booking-marking, and social media. At the moment the content is heavily focused on recipes, fashion, crafts, cute animals, etc. with a rather girly appeal. Big companies are catching on though.
Here is GE’s Pinterest page:
As Pinterest gains more traction it will most likely flow into other content areas as well. From this point of view it will be smart for business to follow along with the development. Pinterest allows users to find new products. Product images from a company’s webpage can be given the “pin it” link just like sharing it on Twitter or “liking” it on Facebook. Savvy businesses will interact beyond simply posting product shots however. Pinterest also leverages the other sites (Twitter, Facebook) to drive more traffic.
It will be “pinteresting” to see how businesses use the site to connect with customers and other stakeholders here in the Middle East.
